Changes to the 2013 Play! Pokémon season have been announced. The Regional Championships will take place on three different weekends throughout the season.

During the fall, the Regional Championships will take place Oct. 13, 2013 and Oct. 14, 2013. During the winter, the Regional Championships will take place Jan. 19, 2013 and Jan. 20, 2013. During the spring, the Regional Championships will take place April 13, 2013 and April 14, 2013.

For Pokémon Trading Card Game players, the championships points system has been changed. The point system is increased by a factor of ten. If a player received one point for a specific placement last season, they will receive ten points this season. If a player received two points for a specific placement last season, they will receive 20 points this season.

The World Championships will require 400 points to earn an invitation. The National Championships will no longer award invitations to the World Championships. In the US, the top eight finishers will receive 500 points to earn an invitation to the World Championships. The required placement to receive 500 points to earn an invitation in other countries varies, depending on where the National Championships are held.

The Battle Road events will be awarding points to more participants than before. All July events will award points toward invitations to the National and World Championships. The top four finishers in the 2013 World Championships will be awarded enough points to receive invitations to the 2014 World Championships.

Video game players who participate in the GBU Wi-Fi Championships can earn byes in the Regional Championships. The Regional Championships byes can be used for the winter and spring Regional Championships. The top four players in the North American and European areas from each age division will receive invitations to the 2013 World Championships in Vancouver.
