The format for the 2018 Video Game Championships has been announced. The 2018 Video Game Championships will be played using Double Battles in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. All Pokémon will be temporarily set to level 50, including Pokémon below level 50. The official rules document will be updated in December for the 2018 format. These rules will be available for download from the Festival Plaza in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

All Pokémon in the National Pokédex are permitted, except Mythical Pokémon, Special Legendary Pokémon, and Greninja with Battle Bond (i.e. Greninja that can transform into Ash-Greninja). Additionally, all Pokémon must have the black clover origin marking in order to participate (meaning that they were originally obtained in a Generation VII game).

Players may only use one Pokémon of each species, and cannot have duplicate held items. Z-Crystals and Mega Stones are permitted.

Battles will be conducted using 5 minutes of "Your Time" (in contrast to 10 minutes used in the 2017 season). With "Your Time", each player has their own timer, and time is only deducted from it while that player is making a decision; time elapsed during move animations, waiting for the other player, etc. is not deducted.
