The Hollywood Reporter announced on January 30th, 2017 that Bill Nighy and Chris Geere will join the Detective Pikachu cast. However, it is not known what roles they will be playing.

Bill Nighy is known for the films Lawless Heart, I Capture the Castle, Shaun of the Dead, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Notes on a Scandal, Hot Fuzz, Valkyrie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, Rango and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Chris Geere is known for the FXX comedy You're the Worst.

Rob Letterman is directing the movie, which is due to start shooting in January in London. It has already been announced that Ryan Reynolds will be voicing Detective Pikachu. Ken Watanabe has been announced to voice Detective Yoshida, Justice Smith will play the male lead, and Kathryn Newton, will play the female lead, Lucy.

The film is set to debut in cinemas on May 10th, 2019.
