Giratina and the Sky's Bouquet: Shaymin made more than 1 billion yen (US$9.44 million) at the Japanese box office this weekend, earning it second place, but it failed to defeat Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki's new film, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea.

Pokémon made a total of 1,018,767,450 yen (US$9,439,150), and Ponyo made 1,575,817,355 (US$14,603,071) yen over the two days included in the receipt count. Both movies debuted Saturday.

A total of 981,543 people saw the Pokémon movie, whereas Ponyo drew 1,251,107 people to the theaters.

In 2007, Dialga vs. Palkia vs. Darkrai topped the box office its opening weekend, earning about 1.13 billion yen over its first two days with a total of 1,074,000 viewers.
