I understand this may be a futile attempt to overturn a longstanding convention, but what is the insistence on using Japanese names in the news articles? This is an English language wiki, and, if not most contributors, certainly most readers are more familiar with the English names. I understand that this news is coming out of Japan, and the episode will air in Japan long before it does in America, but, using myself as the yard stick for the average Bulbapedia reader, I would rather see "Ash's Infernape" than "Satoshi's Goukazaru." - The reason had been discussed before. The reason is to make it clear that the article is about a new Japanese episode, not a dub. And if this get changed, my edits on Bulbanews will go down. Drastically. Argy had good control of the site, and now it seems to be changing to a less-professional stance.--immewnitythemew 00:23, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
- The vast majority of news about the anime seems to be about the Japanese episodes, so why not assume that unless otherwise noted? Also, most of each episode's title is already translated from Japanese into English, like, in this article for example, "Explosive Evolution", so why not translate the character names as well? - Matt, Argy left Bulbanews months ago. How has it changed to be less professional? Additionally, I never said anything about changing the policy, but we do have to do something about it. Whether that does mean changing it or taking a hard-core stance to keep it remains to be seen. All that I'm saying is that I'm open to change with this particular issue. Remember, this is one of our most controversial policies. Personally, I find it a deterrent from reading the articles when they are laced with Japanese like this. And if I were a more casual Pokémon fan with an RSS subscription to Bulbanews, I wouldn't want to have half of the articles in my feed have words in the title in a language that I don't understand.
There are a lot of fans that don't give a crap about the Japanese stuff, and we still report it because there are a lot of fans that do. I think that it would be a good idea to at least think about making these articles a little more friendly to the casual reader then they are.
I'd also like to inquire why your edits would go down should the policy be changed. I can't see how different names would have an impact on your edit count, in which case you would be contributing less for no reason other then disliking a policy, like some sort of protest. If that still doesn't suffice, we could do a South Korea to have distributions in July, with the English name in parenthesis.
