The official site of {{bp|Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U}}, as well as its YouTube channel, has revealed that Charizard will return as a veteran fighter, being previously playable in the Brawl entry of the series, and Generation VI Pokémon, Greninja, to be a playable character as well. Not much is currently known about either of the participant
In a video released alongside the Super Smash Bros. Direct, the official site of {{bp|Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U}}, as well as its YouTube channel, has revealed that in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U {{p|Charizard}} will return as a standalone veteran fighter, being previously playable in {{bp|Super Smash Bros. Brawl}} as part of the Pokémon Trainer roster, and the Generation VI Pokémon, {{p|Greninja}}, will be a playable character as well.


The footage also has revealed that Resolute Form Keldeo and Fennekin appear in the game via currently unknown way.
A new item, the {{bp|Master Ball}}, will hold rare and legendary Pokémon. The footage has also revealed several Pokémon appearing in Poké Balls and Master Balls, including recurring Pokémon such as {{p|Meowth}}, {{p|Staryu}}, {{p|Electrode}}, {{p|Metagross}}, {{p|Entei}} and {{p|Deoxys}}, and newcomers such as {{p|Fennekin}}, {{p|Eevee}}, Resolute Forme {{p|Keldeo}}, Aria Forme {{p|Meloetta}}, {{bp|Arceus}}, {{p|Xerneas}}, {{p|Gogoat}}, {{p|Kyurem}} and {{p|Victini}}.
 
Also revealed in the video was {{p|Lucario}}'s ability to Mega Evolve, although Masahiro Sakurai did not announce how Lucario will do this in the Super Smash Bros. Direct. Lucario's aura attacks will become more powerful when it takes more damage but players will need to be careful about the distance gained from these more powerful attacks. Mega Lucario's aura attacks will always do maximum damage. Charizard was also revealed to Mega Evolve into Mega Charizard X.
 
Exclusive to Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, a new mode called Smash Run has players collecting unique power ups by defeating enemies within 5 minutes to use in a Free-for-All Smash battle against each other. {{p|Chandelure}} will be included as an enemy to defeat for the power ups in Smash Run mode.
 
The release periods for both versions were also announced by Masahiro Sakurai in the Direct. Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS will release first during Northern Hemisphere summer 2014 while Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will release later during Northern Hemisphere winter 2014.
