In a video released alongside the Super Smash Bros. Direct, the official site of {{bp|Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U}}, as well as its YouTube channel, has revealed that Charizard will return as a standalone veteran fighter, being previously playable in the Brawl entry of the series as part of Pokémon Trainer roster, and Generation VI Pokémon, Greninja, to be a playable character as well.

The last few seconds of the video showed Greninja using a mysterious special move, which could be its Final Smash.

Exclusive to Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, a new mode called Smash Run has players collecting unique power ups by defeating enemies within 5 minutes to use in a Free-for-All Smash battle against each other. {{p|Chandelure}} will be included as an enemy to defeat for the power ups in Smash Run mode.
 
The release periods for both versions were also announced by Masahiro Sakurai in the Direct. Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS will release first during Northern Hemisphere summer 2014 while Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will release later during Northern Hemisphere winter 2014.
