Charizard and Greninja

In a video released alongside the Super Smash Bros. Direct, the official site of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U, as well as its YouTube channel, has revealed that in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U Charizard will return as a standalone veteran fighter, being previously playable in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as part of the Pokémon Trainer roster, and the Generation VI Pokémon, Greninja, will be a playable character as well.

A new item, the Master Ball, will hold rare and legendary Pokémon. The footage has also revealed several Pokémon appearing in Poké Balls and Master Balls, including recurring Pokémon such as Meowth, Staryu, Electrode, Metagross, Entei and Deoxys, and newcomers such as Fennekin, Eevee, Resolute Forme Keldeo, Aria Forme Meloetta, Arceus, Xerneas, Gogoat, Kyurem and Victini.

Also revealed in the video was Lucario's ability to Mega Evolve, although Masahiro Sakurai did not announce how Lucario will do this in the Super Smash Bros. Direct. Lucario's aura attacks will become more powerful when it takes more damage but players will need to be careful about the distance gained from these more powerful attacks. Mega Lucario's aura attacks will always do maximum damage. Charizard was also revealed to Mega Evolve into Mega Charizard X.

Exclusive to Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, a new mode called Smash Run has players collecting unique power ups by defeating enemies within 5 minutes to use in a Free-for-All Smash battle against each other. Chandelure will be included as an enemy to defeat for the power ups in Smash Run mode.

The release periods for both versions were also announced by Masahiro Sakurai in the Direct. Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS will release first during Northern Hemisphere summer 2014 while Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will release later during Northern Hemisphere winter 2014.
