Players can compete in two qualifying events to win a trip to the 2018 World Championships in August to Nashville, TN. Those who qualify at these events will face against players from Japan and competitors from a Last Chance Qualifier competition that will take place at the Pokémon World Championships. A prize pool worth over US$20,000 is given to the winning competitors.
Qualifying
There will be two age divisions for all competitors. The Masters Division is for competitors born in 2002 or earlier and the Senior Division is for competitors born in 2003 or later. Players can qualify for the World Championships by placing highly in either a series event or in the Last Chance Qualifier at the World Championships.
A maximum of 256 competitors will be able to compete in each of the Masters and Senior Divisions in the Last Chance Qualifier competition. Two qualified Masters players and one Senior player will proceed to the main event.
A total of 16 Masters and eight Senior Division players will qualify for the Pokkén Tournament World Championships: two Masters and one Senior from Oceania Internationals, four Masters and two Seniors from North America Internationals, and four Masters and two Seniors from the Sheffield Regional Championships. The remainder of the invitations will be awarded to players from Japan and via the Last Chance Qualifier.
Competitors have to have a HORI wired controller or a wired fight stick to play Pokkén Tournament DX in the Championship Series. No Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers will be permitted, even with a USB cable.
