A physical box containing a download code will be released in stores in Europe for the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console release of Pokémon Gold and Silver. It will be released on September 22, 2017, which is the date the games will be released on Virtual Console normally.

The box does not include a game card, only a download code. This code can be redeemed on the Nintendo eShop.

For the release of Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow on Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console in Japan, download code special editions were available which included a download code for the game, a special edition box, stickers, a cartridge-shaped magnet, and a map of the Kanto region in the games. They were also alternatively available in a Nintendo 2DS bundle. Similar packaged versions will be available in Japan for Pokémon Gold and Silver.

In Europe and Australia, Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow were not released physically on their own, but they were included in Nintendo 2DS bundles.
